This year, P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E. Institute proudly commemorates the tenth anniversary of the annual OHO Group Award, the central national award dedicated to the support and promotion of young contemporary visual artists. For this year’s tenth edition, we’ve prepared an exhibition of the nominees entitled “Don’t eat the yellow snow”. You are cordially invited to attend the opening event at P74 Gallery on 10 June 2015 at 19h.

The OHO Group Award was established by P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E. Institute, a non-profit organisation that has been working in the fields of visual, intermediate and music arts since 1999. The award is made possible with the cooperation of our international partners: the Foundation for Civil Society and the Trust for Mutual Understanding (New York City).

It all started once upon a time in Prague in 1989, in collaboration with the artist and then- president of the Czech Republic Vaclav Havel – who significantly shaped the mission and goals of this first award – and the president of the Foundation for Civil Society, Wendy Luers. Slovenia later joined the family of awards in 2006.

We’ve named this award for young creators after the most important neo-avant-garde artist group, the OHO Group, who brought to the local context radical innovations and sparked a total upheaval. Their nonconformist activities and original opus were based on complex theoretical reflection and critical conceptual analysis.

In a mere ten years, the OHO Group Award has achieved exceptional success and an excellent response – especially through the dedicated participation of the artists. In the last ten years, over 300 young artists and artist groups from throughout Slovenia have responded to the public calls for the OHO Group Award. During that same time, over 30 artists, theorists, art historians and curators from Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Austria and Germany have served on the expert juries.

And just what does the award bring to young creators? Undoubtedly, the most important aspect is the six-week artistic residency in New York City: a significant learning experience about how the art system operates, including meetings with influential museum directors and networking with curators and artists. The award is especially generous because it covers travel, accommodation and production costs for the recipient artist. Upon the artist’s return, the award provides for a solo presentation of the recipient’s work in P74 Gallery and the main sponsor of the award purchases an artwork.

Before us lies a new and exciting year of collective collaboration. We wish to thank all of the artists, collaborators and international partners who have aided in making the award a vital part in the integration of local and international activities. For local financial support we especially wish to thank the Department for Culture of the Municipality of Ljubljana, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia and the main sponsor of the award KD Group d.d. and AS Adriatic Slovenica.
